Jesus answered and said unto him,Except a Man be Born Again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” - John 3:3.

The Bible is very clear on the absolute necessity of a person being ‘Born-again’ if they are to receive Eternal Life. Jesus coined this term, in John 3:3-7, when he told the Pharisee Nicodemus, "You must be born again" to enter into the Kingdom of God. Since this necessity is so critical, Satan has attacked it with clever cunning for nearly two thousand years. This has caused most "Christian" churches to stop teaching this doctrine, even though no one can be saved without undergoing this wondrous spiritual conversion. However, Satan's most effective weapon against being Born-again has been, and still is, confusion and ridicule.

Fortunately for us, Jesus lovingly made this transformation process very simple. In fact it is so simple that even if a person were to be illiterate, they could understand how to be Born-again. There are several steps to understanding the process, and they are listed below:

     1. Understand that all men that were ever born, are sinners, because each and every one of us has broken God’s laws. Romans 3:23, says, "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God". This message that all men are sinners is frequently repeated throughout Scripture. This means that you are a sinner in the eyes of a righteous God, who must punish all sin. Do you believe that you are a sinner?

     2. Since man is an imperfect sinner, and God is a perfect God, no person can save themself. Jesus made this fact very plain in Matthew 5:48, when He said, "Be ye therefore, perfect, even as your Heavenly Father is perfect”.

You’re probably thinking right now, “If I have to be perfect in God's eyes, how can there be anyone in Heaven?”. Especially since the Bible declares many times over, that ALL people are sinners and have broken God’s laws? Obviously no one is going to get into Heaven with a standard that is set this high! It also establishes as full blown lies, the sayings: "you can get into Heaven if your good deeds out-weigh your bad deeds" and/or "you can get into Heaven by being a good moral person". There are no verses of scripture to back-up these completely wrong statements.

But since there are going to be millions of people in Heaven, there must be some way to get into there; other than by trying to be “perfect”, which is an impossible task for us humans. Hold on just a little... and we’ll get into all that.

The reason that we are not perfect is because of sin in our life. So to deal with this problem, you must look at your own life and want to get that corrected. Therefore you must be seriously sorry for your sin against God, and desire from your heart to apologize, and have your sins forgiven: this is known as Repentance. The word Repent means to both be sincerely sorry for your sins, and to want to not sin anymore. Repentance means the desire to turn your life around 180 degrees. This does not mean you will never sin again, but it does mean that sin will become the exception in your life, and not the rule.

The Lord Jesus Christ stated two consecutive times in the Book of Luke: “but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish” in chapter 13, verses 3 and 5.

     3. When the sinless Son of God, Jesus Christ shed His precious blood on the cross at Calvary, He died for the sins of all people, in their place as a sacrificial substitute. He paid the penalty of eternal damnation for all the sin of mankind, in His own body and purchased eternal redemption for all mankind. This enables Him to give as a free gift, the holiness and righteousness of Jesus Christ himself, to those who believe on Him and trust in Him for salvation. Making them who accept that gift, absolutely perfect in God the Father’s sight!

Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. None of us deserve to be saved; in His love and mercy God extends this grace to those who will repent and submit to his authority. Grace can be defined as ‘undeserved favor’ and perhaps this little acrostic will help you to remember its meaning: God's Riches At Christ's Expense. [The true meaning of GRACE].

     4. In Ephesians 2:8-9, the Apostle Paul reiterates this teaching that eternal life with God is a free gift. "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; Not of works, lest any man should boast". No man can stand before God in Heaven, and boast that they “earned” their way there. Any and every soul in Heaven will be there only because of the FREE Gift which Jesus offers to every person. This He obtained from God the Father, because of His voluntary death sacrifice on the Cross. Please read Isaiah 53: 3 - 12, as soon as you get the chance.

Now you are probably thinking, “How can I obtain this free gift of eternal life?”. Again, the Bible is not silent, for in Acts 16: 25-33, the jailer anxiously asked the Apostle Paul, "What must I do to be saved?”. Paul answered, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved" at verse 31. You must BELIEVE on Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. To truly believe, you must place your complete faith and trust in Christ, and rely upon Him as your only hope of salvation and eternal life. This is a matter of the heart, and you cannot possibly hope to deceive God by putting on an act, because He knows everything about you, especially what is in your heart.

Many people are dangerously mistaken, when they conclude that just by believing the facts concerning Jesus Christ's death, burial, and resurrection, that they will automatically be given the gift of eternal life; but such is not the case. True Bible believing preachers call that a "head knowledge and not a heart knowledge”. There are others who use a phrase that has a similar meaning, ‘giving mental assent to God’. Salvation is freely given, but only to those who are genuine believers. Not to those who just want to add Jesus to their own lifestyle.

Again, you have to believe that Jesus is God in your heart; just believing Him to be God in your head will get you nowhere. Jesus called out hypocrites in His day, then stated, “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men” Matthew 15: 8-9.

     5. In John 1:1-14, we see that Jesus Christ is God, equal with the Father, present with God from before the beginning of Genesis 1:1, and the actual Creator of the Universe. Jesus was both 100% God and 100% human at the same time when He walked on this Earth, which is why He used both of these titles during His ministry: Son of God and Son of Man. To become Born-again, you must believe this doctrine about Jesus Christ.

Verse 14 is most important, the teaching that Jesus (the second person of the Trinity) became man. This teaching becomes a point of separation between the followers of Christ and antichrists (all religions). In 1 John 4:1-3, we see that anyone who denies that Jesus has come in the flesh has the spirit of antichrist, which is just what the Gnostics of that day were teaching. They claimed that Jesus was just a human, and not God the Messiah come in the flesh. The Gnostics declared that the 'Christ Consciousness' or 'Messiah Consciousness' as they termed it, came on Jesus at His baptism and left Him when He was arrested and put on trial. They asserted that Jesus was not God and man, but was man - only. The New Age Movement, Freemasonry and the Jehovah’s Witnesses, have resurrected this blasphemy with a vengeance.

     6. Isaiah 53:6 foretells exactly what Jesus Christ did for us on the Cross; "the Lord [God the Father] has laid on Him the iniquity of us all". Praise God! Only the wisdom, grace, and power of God Almighty could conceive of such a gracious Plan of Salvation! God's intrinsic nature is such that sin must be punished, Period! But, God set up a Plan whereby an innocent substitute was to be punished, instead of the guilty person. In the Old Testament, God allowed the lamb to be the substitute sacrifice for sin; Jesus then became the ultimate, substitute sacrificial lamb for all the sins of the world. His was that Perfect Sacrifice, that will never be repeated, and which saves all people forever and ever-after.

Hebrews 10:12 - "But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God (14) For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified".

     7. Now without this last one that we are going to discuss, none of this would have made any difference; Jesus after 3 nights and on the third day: arose bodily from the grave. This prophesied phenomenon is known as: The Resurrection.

In this next portion of scripture that we are going to quote - Jesus is explaining the prophecy to His disciples...

“Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again
  – Luke 18: 31-33

These next verses are after Jesus was crucified, buried and had been resurrected,

“He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. And they remembered his words”
  – Luke 24: 6-8

Then lastly we have the Apostle Peter many years later, declaring the Resurrection of Jesus, and how that we are to share in this prosperity...

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (4)To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, (5)Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time”
  – 1 Peter 1: 3-5

Now that you understand these Truths: hopefully you want to trust in them. You now need to understand how you can obtain this free gift of Eternal Life, through Jesus Christ. After all, if I were to attempt to give you a gift; that gift would not become yours, if you were to refuse to reach out and take that gift from my hand. So it is the same here. You must reach out and take this free gift of Eternal Life from the hand of Jesus Christ, for you to have Saving Faith. So, how is this done? Hold on, we are almost there.

But notice I said Saving Faith. There are types of faith that will not lead to you being Born Again. You may have 'head knowledge' faith that merely intellectually assents to the facts of Jesus Christ's person, but that is not Saving Faith. You may be in a 'church' or a cult that teaches many truths about Jesus Christ, but who also teach that you must do many things to earn your way to Heaven. This is not Saving Faith, either.

Saving Faith is trusting in Jesus Christ and Him alone, for your Salvation. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” Acts 4:12. And this next verse also emphasizes the same point...

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me
  – John 14: 6

For if you think you need to do anything for Salvation except trust in Jesus’ own work on the cross, you are guilty of violating Ephesians 2:8-9 and Isaiah 53:6b. Most cults and false Christian religions do err at this point, by adding things that they declare are "necessary" for Salvation, such as water baptism or they offer a counterfeit way to Heaven, such as sacraments. But all the while, they dismiss the pure uncomplicated concept that is laid out very simply in the Bible, that of being Born-again.

Do you want this Gift of Eternal Life that Jesus left Heaven, for to give you? For a moment, envision God himself leaving Heaven to come to this Earth to physically live with us, while being mocked, cursed and ridiculed his whole ministry by the religious powers that be. Then he allows his body to be whipped and beaten, his blood being slung everywhere, then pooling at his feet when they had finally stopped; along with more mocking, more cursing, and even more ridicule. After this, there is the sound of a heavy hammer, clanging against metal spikes that are being driven through the wrists of Jesus, and on into solid wood.

Have you any idea what it would feel like... having spikes driven through each of your wrists and both of your feet, then on into a wooden cross? Then immediately thereafter, to have that same heavy cross with the weight of a man, lifted high up into the air and then dropped with a bone-wrenching thud when it hit the bottom of that hole, while still being nailed to it?

At this point, Jesus hangs there consciously feeling intense and raw pain, exploding through his nerves, and throbbing within His muscles. The only way for him to be able to breathe, was by pushing Himself up and supporting Himself with His legs (which is why they broke the legs of the two thieves to kill them). This humiliating and excruciatingly disturbing scene went on and on, as the mocking, and the cursing and the ridicule continued.

Jesus the Christ hung there on that cross for over -3- tormented hours, having to force himself to breathe through severe stabbing pain, as his blood seeped from His body. Now I ask you: could there be a more genuine to the heart and soul manner, of laying it all out there on the line, in such an unmistakable way of saying that I love you so much, that I will voluntarily die for you, to prove it, death? I mean, is there anything more that He could have put himself through, to get His point across to us, and to you?!

As for me, I’m convinced that Jesus was absolutely and unquestionably serious about His dedication to make a way for us to get into Heaven! What are those who rejected Him, going to be able to say against Him, on their day of judgment? So then the question comes back around to you. What is your answer to His offer of the gift of Eternal Life that He earned for you; by living a sinless life, bought with his shed blood, and paid dearly for with his excruciating death, for you, and offers to you, just for asking?

Reading these next 3 verses, the love that Jesus has for us is made very apparent. First, this prophetical verse from the Old Testament,I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting” Isaiah 50: 6. Jesus offered Himself into this arena, knowing ahead of time His fate and its outcome!

“Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father”
  – John 10: 17–18

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you”
  – John 15: 13–15

If your answer is, “Yes, I want to be Born Again” you can immediately have Eternal Life. Let me clarify exactly what this involves. First, you are going to transfer your trust, your hope of eternal life from what you have been doing, to what Jesus Christ has done for you on the cross. Jesus will take your sin and transfer to you His right standing with God the Father, what we call His Righteousness. This means that though we have failed repeatedly in God’s eyes and have repeatedly broken His laws: Christ perfectly obeyed all the laws of God. He lived the perfect life, so that He could be the perfect, innocent (not guilty of anything) substitutionary sacrifice that God would accept for your sins, and the sin of the entire world, for all who will believe and receive his gift.

Are you willing to repent of your sins right now, and become a responsible member of God's eternal family, following Him and serving Him as a member of His body, the Church? If your heartfelt answer is, "Yes" - then you can go to Him now in prayer, and you can tell Him that you want to cease trusting in anything else for Eternal Salvation. You can place your trust in Him and Him alone, for salvation. Before you pray this simple prayer, I need to point out that the Lord Jesus Christ is looking into your heart more than He is listening to your lips. As He promised, "Ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart" - Jeremiah 29: 13.

If you are serious and sincere about this, then the Lord will hear your prayer and grant you Eternal Life, right now, in the privacy of your home. Pray a prayer something like the following. Also understand that it is not so much the words that matter, what is important is what is going on in your heart at this time.

Jesus Christ is right with you, right now. You are not talking to anyone now, but to Him. If you really want to be Born-again, into the Eternal Family of God through Jesus Christ, pray a prayer similar to this prayer, from your heart

"Holy Father, I am a sinner and I need forgiveness. I repent of my sin against you and ask you to forgive my sins. I believe that Jesus is God, and that he shed his blood and died for my sin. I want to turn from my life of sin and live for you. I now submit unto you, and ask Jesus Christ to come into my heart to be my personal Lord and Savior, and to take over my life, and help me to be a Bible-believing Christian".

You have just prayed the most important prayer you have ever prayed in your life. If you were sincere in this prayer, I want you to see what Jesus says about what you have just done. In John 6:47, Jesus says, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on Me has everlasting life". In your prayer, you didn't hear any angel choirs or see any visions; however, by a simple act of faith, you have placed your trust for your Eternal Salvation in Jesus Christ.

Saving Faith is trusting in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation. If you meant with your heart what you just said with your lips, you have the promise of Jesus Christ that He has forgiven your sins, and has adopted you into the kingdom, and has given you eternal life in Heaven with Him.

As it says in the Book of Romans: “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” chapter 10, verse 13. Then over in the Book of 1st John it states, “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God” chapter 5 and verses 11-13.

If this sounds so simple you have trouble believing that it could be true, the Bible assures you that it is most definitely true. Over the centuries, man has deliberately complicated this simple Plan of Salvation, so that most people do not know how uncomplicated God has made Salvation through Jesus Christ, to be. If you were genuine in your prayer, you now have eternal life, and are as assured of it as if you were already there! I John 3:2, "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is".

This is why Jesus said, that no person can ever take any of His who are ‘Born-again’ out of the Father's hand; “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my Father are one” John 10:27-30. This in a nutshell, is the doctrine of Eternal Security.

How can you know for sure that you have been Born-again? Please do not expect any ‘earth-shaking’ experience, because in the majority of cases it comes about in a rather peaceful way, a sense of relief and a load lifted; just a wonderful calm that goes deep down inside.

But with the passing of time, I have found that one of the best indicators of the New Birth is being genuinely able to start understanding the Word of God. Prior to being Born-again, you were a lost person, the Bible also refers to this condition as, "natural man" and as such, a person cannot really understand the Bible.

Take a look at what is written in 1 Corinthians 2:11b-14: “even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. Indeed, the Word of God is foolishness to the lost person!

So when the Word of God begins to make sense, to speak to your heart, and convict you of sin in your life, it is a very good indicator that you have the Holy Spirit of God residing within you. You see, a Christian obtains a new spiritual nature by the New Birth, but he does not get rid of the old nature he was born with. That is why it is so vitally important that we "grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ" - 2 Peter 3:18. We must cooperate with the Holy Spirit as we walk through this sinful and spiritually defiling world around us. The Holy Spirit literally takes up residence within us when we are Born-again, and will never leave us nor forsake us.

You are most probably wondering how the Holy Spirit of God came to indwell inside of you. The short answer is, that when a person truly trusts on Jesus in their heart, and since God knows the truth of all: Jesus then immediately at the moment of Salvation baptizes that person with the Holy Spirit (sometimes called the Holy Ghost or just, the Spirit). In the Book of Luke we read, “And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost Chapter 3, verses 15-16. This did not happen in the Old Testament.

Another wonderful evidence of genuine salvation is found in the "fruit of the Spirit" (Galatians 5:22) that will take place in our daily lives as the Holy Spirit works within us. His presence will be manifested to the outside world by means of the love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance that they see in us! Then, the Bible tells us in Romans 8:16 that, "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God". In other words, the Holy Spirit living deep within us, tells us that we belong to God.

What great news, for now we have the same Holy Spirit power within us that raised Jesus from the dead, “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you” - Romans 8:11. In fact, read Romans chapter 8 to see all the advantages that we have, because the Holy Spirit indwells us permanently while we are in this body upon this Earth.

The other important matter in your relationship with the Holy Spirit that you need to understand, is that when Jesus baptized you: you now have all of the Holy Spirit that you are ever going to get, but He does not have all of you. So now the matter becomes you allowing God to have more direction in your life, day by day. This will happen as you read and study the Bible, and very importantly memorize some verses. Prayer then becomes extremely important, as you share your life and thoughts with God. You do not always need to stop and bow the knee or your head to pray, you can even talk to God in your head throughout the day as you walk around, as you would a friend.

For you see, in basic terms prayer is you speaking to God, and studying the Bible is when God speaks to you. And, the more God’s Words are in you by study and memorization, the more and easier it is for God to remind you of them, in real life situations. As you read the Bible, especially the New Testament, you will come to understand the wonderful depth you can reach between you and your Creator! Salvation produces a relationship that can deeply enrich your life daily, if you will let it! You would never have believed, prior to becoming Born-again, what kind of life you have been missing out on for so long!
